How to make an intervention successful

To host a drug and alcohol intervention without a great deal of planning and direction greatly reduces your success rate. If you want to know how to make an intervention successful, ask the pros.

1. Involve as many people as possible at the beginning. These are people that the subject loves and respects the most.

2. Narrow the field. Have just the people in the intervention that will stay on task.

3. Plan for everything. What will he or she object to. Make a list. Have responses prepared.

4. Follow the outline (set by your professional interventionist) to the letter.

5. Don't get into a confrontation or big discussion.

6. Make sure you are asking for them to go to treatment today.

7. Be prepared. If they say "yes", have a bed waiting. If they say know, explain your strong ultimatums and execute them.

8. Host a pre intervention meeting the night before. Discuss everything that could possibly happen the next day.

9. Choose appropriate time to confront the subject (usually when they are waking up).

10. Plan on meeting down the street from the intervention address. Caravan to the house all at the same time.
